Daddy's Bookcase

I love this old bookcase, not because it's vintage, though it is.  The truth is, it's probably older than I am.  This is a very special little bookcase, because it was built by my Daddy.  My Father was a carpenter, who mostly built custom cabinetry for kitchens.  He never had a big, fancy workshop or elaborate tools.  But he did manage to handcraft some very special pieces, and this sturdy little bookcase was one of them.  Daddy loved Craftsman style wood work, and it shows in this piece.  It also shows the wear and tear that a big, busy family puts on it's funiture.  This bookcase survived a family with eight children, as well as scores of foster and babysitting kids.  Every nick and scratch means something to me, and I will never refinish this precious bookcase.  Every time I look at it, I think of my Daddy and the love he had in abundance for his big, busy family.
Thank you, Daddy!  I miss you.

  1. I feel the same way about an old maple table that my father made. Even though it is one of those awkward pieces ... a pedestal round table with 2 tiers ... it is still special and beautiful. Great bookcase and great picture of your dad!
