It's old, very nicely turned wood, about 2" tall and 3 1/4" in diameter. The knob rises about 1/4" above the rim and is scorched, as is the inside of the bowl. I got it at a thrift store for 60 cents because I love old wood and it intrigues me! I've got some feelers out, as well as an idea of my own, but I'd like a few guesses before I tell you what I think this might be!
.........since I'm not getting any guesses, I'll just tell you, that I have it on good authority (the Gardenweb Antique and Collectible forum) that this is indeed a pipe ashtray! It was probably made as a Shop class project, I'd like to think as a gift for a special Dad, or Grampa.
